50/50 proceeds purchase new, comfy dialysis chairs for Health Sciences North

Added comfort for patients who are required to spend several hours each week getting dialysis treatment

Health Sciences North is acquiring six new dialysis chairs for use in the Nephrology Department, thanks to the success of the regular HSN 50/50 Cash Lottery for the North, which benefits Health Sciences North (HSN) Foundation, NEO Kids Foundation, the Northern Cancer Foundation, and the HSN Volunteer Association.

Dialysis is a treatment that filters the blood and removes liquid using a machine when the kidneys lose 85 to 90 per cent of proper function. The length of dialysis treatment depends on a number of factors, but a typical treatment lasts approximately four hours and is done three times per week, said a news release from the HSN Foundation.

Steffany Bourque, manager of Satellite Dialysis, Home Dialysis and Dialysis Programs at HSN said the purchase of the new chairs is important because they are used so often by so many patients on a continuing basis.

“This purchase is a big deal for dialysis patients all over northeastern Ontario,” said Bourque.

“In Sudbury, the chairs will be used 12 hours a day, six days a week, but this also allows us to keep our six satellite dialysis clinics in outlying communities with functioning patient chairs. Many patients stay on a dialysis program three times a week for the rest of their lives, so ensuring safe and comfortable chairs is a priority for us.”

Anthony Keating, president and CDO of Foundations and Volunteer Groups at HSN said the continued success of the monthly draws is something that pays off nicely for the patients at the hospital.

“As the monthly jackpots keep climbing we get more and more excited to continue purchasing vital pieces of equipment for our hospital and the patients of northeastern Ontario. It’s a truly incredible feeling,” said Keating.

The foundation reminds residents that anyone in Ontario over the age of 18 can purchase tickets for a chance to win. Tickets are sold online and start at only $10 and are available to purchase right now, with sales ending at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 31, 2021. The jackpot winning ticket will be drawn on Tuesday, June 1 at 10:00 a.m. and posted online at www.hsn5050.ca. Lottery license #11977.
